Pastoral Counseling

"Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working."

~James 5:14-16

What is Pastoral Counseling

Pastoral counseling uses many of the same tools of traditional psychotherapy, but it supports those tools with theology, faith, traditional knowledge, and the additional resources available within faith-based communities.  A pastoral counselor is a helpful resource for many of the same issues for which people traditionally seek counseling including anxiety, depression, and PTSD.   Pastoral counseling is ideal for individuals who are coping with the aftermath of experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event or under extreme stress who may benefit from talking to a theologist in addition to a traditional mental health counselor.

More than Just Counseling

The pastoral counselor’s job is to seamlessly integrate spiritual values with the scientific aspects of psychotherapy. While pastoral counseling invites religious principles into the counseling session, the pastoral counselor must abide by psychotherapeutic guidelines to provide the best care of our program participants.

At Ahava, we know the power that faith and God play in healing the human soul.  By offering Pastoral Counseling, we give our program participants support and healing that traditional therapies can't offer, the kind that only God can provide.

Added Benefits of Pastoral Counseling

With a divine mission to serve Christ by serving those suffering from emotional distress, pastoral counselors help restore the unique person they know is still inside them – the person they were made to be.  Talking to a pastor helps individuals clear the frightening fog from their life through inspiring, life-changing support and mentorship.

Guidance from Christ-Lead Therapists

Trauma can be difficult to confront, but by addressing the root of the trauma, an individual can address every unsettled issue that lives inside them. Pastoral Counseling uses divine wisdom and faith in combination with psychotherapy to help individuals process their feelings and rediscover who they really are and who God has made them to be.

Faith Based Therapy

Before pursuing pastoral counseling, one may have abandoned their connection with God, or feel abandoned by him during a traumatic situation and the aftermath of emotions that follow.  Some have not explored a relationship with Him yet and do not know the healing that relationship brings to the soul. Both groups are welcome within pastoral counseling.
